Simon Britton Estimator

Simon joined us in November 2003 and currently works as an Estimator. In his role simon is responsible for the production of cost estimates for tender submissions. This involves producing estimates from first principal, this may include production of bills of quantities; activity schedules; schedules of rates and day works, so it keeps me extremely busy.

Simon's background

After completing his engineering qualifications in 2002 he began working within the rail industry as a Quantity Surveyor.

What do you enjoy about working at VolkerRail?

I really appreciate the support that the company provides in relation to developing my career. They are extremely keen to progress my career further by providing the necessary training and experience required.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career with VolkerRail?

VolkerRail rewards anyone willing to go that extra mile. It is a friendly company that looks after its employees, anyone with the right attitude will progress far with this company.

Joanne Mason - Supplier Assurance Manager

Joanne joined VolkerRail in 1999 and has worked her way up through training to become our Supplier Assurance Manager, where she is responsible for the on-going maintenance of our approved supplier database and monitoring supplier performance as well as developing new systems and performance indicators.

What is your background?

Joanne has 27 years of buying experience within various industries including agriculture and retail. Through the companies training scheme Joanne has obtained MCIPS through NVQ Level 4.

What do you enjoy about working at VolkerRail?

I enjoy the varied and challenging working environment; being part of a team at the beginning of new works, seeing the project come to an end and realising that you have been instrumental in a successful conclusion to the work package. Having a flexible attitude to work, I find I am involved in other projects outside my usual work, again adding a variety to the working day.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career with VolkerRail?

Having worked for VolkerRail for over ten years I have been in a privileged position to see the business grow into the successful modern company it is today. The management team encourage staff to show initiative and progression, and invest in employees through training and promotions. I would recommend a career with VolkerRail to anyone and would guarantee an enjoyable and successful career.

Conor McGuigan - Senior Quantity Surveyor

Conor joined us in September 2008 as a Senior Quantity Surveyor and is responsible for various contracts. Conor has also been working full time on the prestigious Manchester Metrolink (Phase 3A) project for GMPTE and currently working on the 22km long Oldham to Rochdale Line, responsible for 15 Tram Stops, 10 Substations and the 'Park ‘n' Rides'.

Conor's background?

Conor obtained a BSc.(Hons) Quantity Surveying & Construction Economics Degree from Salford University and also has various building & civil engineering experience.

What do you enjoy about working at VolkerRail?

VolkerRail has a challenging and varied environment where no two days are the same and the people who I work with are all very dedicated and care about the company's future.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career with VolkerRail?

'Get on board' if you enjoy a challenge, you're willing to learn and you put the work in, you will have a varied and rewarding career here at VolkerRail.

Mark Jackson - General Manager VolkerRail Plant

Mark joined us in November 2008 as General Manger for our plant division. As Manager he is responsible for the safety staff, the efficient utilisation of over 1600 plant/equipment assets and the profit and loss of all three business units. As the business provides plant and services to both internal and external clients, it's important for me to build relationships with a whole range of people.

Mark's background?

Mark is an Mechanical Engineer (complementing an Electrical Engineering apprenticeship) but also has a background in Construction and Building Services contracting and has been increasingly involved in rail projects and businesses since 1999.

What do you enjoy about working at VolkerRail?

Working with VolkerRail gives me the chance to be part of an impressive team. It's fantastic to benefit from the experience, innovation and wisdom of some world-class colleagues and to work with modern, effective and well maintained plant and equipment.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career with VolkerRail?

VolkerRail is very different to many contractors within the rail industry and is an ideal place of work for the more open minded person, who appreciates variety, innovation and entrepreneurial leadership.
