VolkerRail were awarded the works to upgrade Eggington's level crossing as part of the wider North Staffordshire Signalling Renewals Scheme.
'Egginton level crossing is an AHB type crossing which dates back to 1964 and due to its age required modernising. VolkerRail were brought into renew all control equipment, place a new REB unit and carry out renewal of the crossing to current standards to cater for the future increase in line speed to 75mph.
The remit included the introduction of bi-directional crossing controls and strike-in catering for a 40mph wrong direction line speed. Control of the crossing was transferred from Derby power signal box to Egginton signal box on the final commissioning. The multi-disciplinary works included civil engineering, E&P, permanent way, systems, signalling and telecoms.
The North Staffordshire Project was commissioned to time, budget and most importantly accident free.
Throughout the construction phase the site was visited regularly by managers of both VolkerRail and Network Rail and has been held up as an example of best practice in site management. The project team have been commended for their proactive approach to safety by minimizing hazards and continually improving the construction techniques to remove hazards at source.
