Tallington and St Neots Lineside Renewals

Tallington

VolkerRail was contracted by Network Rail to complete the Tallington and St Neots Lineside Signalling Renewals scheme. The purpose of this scheme was to extend the life expectancy of the lineside signalling equipment by upto 15 years.

Peterborough's power signal box (PSB) was constructed in 1972 with a NX domino style panel. The PSB controlled a 58 mile radius between Doncaster's PSB in the North and Kings Cross' PSB in the South.

The project was driven with the purpose of renewing and rationalising, to modern standards, life expired and out of use lineside signalling equipment and infrastructure. This included location cases, signals, lineside signalling and power cables as well as rationalisation of level crossing controls into new relocatable equipment buildings. The team also recovered the control and panel artwork for several previously closed UWC's and the abandonment of the Little Barford ground frame.

VolkerRail installed:

  • 16 new location cases
  • 22 functional supply points, along with the renewal
  • 42 multi core cables
  • 46 affected track circuits
  • 10 insulated rail joints.
