Employee suggestions help raise money for burns research unit

Recent

Staff from VolkerRail have raised £374 for the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit at the University of Bradford by suggesting way to improve the business.

The company’s employee suggestion scheme allows staff to put forward ideas on how the business can improve work effectiveness, efficiency, safety and innovation. To reinforce the scheme, VolkerRail contributes £5 for every suggestion made as well as presenting a recognition award to the person whose idea had the most potential.

Paul Summerfield, engineering manager, received the recognition award and was given the opportunity to choose the charity to receive the donation.

Commenting on why he chose the burns unit, Paul said: “This charity is very close to my heart. 2015 marked the 30th anniversary of the Bradford City fire which I witnessed as a young supporter.

“The incident left lots of people with burn injuries and since then, the burns unit has become the leading centre for plastic surgery and skin regeneration research in the country. They have helped and provided support for victims of some of the most horrific casualties and are leaders in the supply of critical guidance and information to hospitals around the country.”

Ajay Mahajan, director of research at the burn unit, said: “I am touched by the fact that you have thought about us at the research unit. It is kind gestures such as these that help us continue with our research activities that help improve the future of health care.”
