On Thursday 16th April over 100 members of the Central Power and Electrification Team (CPET) held a community day, to undertake activities in support of local projects around Rugby and Walsall.

CPET, consisting of Network Rail and ABC Electrification; working in partnership with VolkerRail and Amey, are currently working a number of significant projects in the area including part of Network Rail’s electrification and plant renewals, the West Coast Power Supply Upgrade and the London North West (LNW); South Electrification project. The community day was held to help CPET engage with the local community and undertake projects that offered the area real benefit.

Katie Ferrier, senior programme manager for CPET said: “Network Rail is responsible for the delivery of £500 million of electrification projects over the next five years and it is important that we give back to the local communities in which we operate. The community day allows us to do this, as well as help develop long team relationships with our delivery partners.”

The group was split into smaller teams and tasked with their own projects. VolkerRail took part in the rejuvenation of a garden at Henry Hinde Junior School in Rugby.

The school’s central courtyard garden was run down and in need of new life. The team provided the labour and materials needed to refurbish the garden and make it a more useful focal point for the school. In just one day the team were able to remove all rubbish, weed, re-paint benches, clean floor slabs, fix guttering, set up composters, create vegetable patches and re-plant new shrubs and trees.

In addition, a Network Rail Safety Truck was also in attendance which was made use of by year three pupils, who were taught and took part in hazard identification and level crossing danger quizzes.

Peter Baverstock, programme manager for VolkerRail said: “This project gave us a great sense of achievement. My team and I are immensely proud of what we have accomplished. Although a large amount of gardening and DIY was needed, we were all pleasantly surprised by the amount of work we managed to achieve in a short period of time. We received high praise form the headmaster, teaching staff and pupils.”

As a result of the activities, the school is now intending to create an after school gardening club, which this project has laid the foundation for them to build upon.

Other projects completed on the day included injecting new life into the Woodlands Adventure Centre garden, improve facilities for the 1st Dunchurch scout hut and contribute to the preservation and conservation of the local countryside wildlife and wildfowl at Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve.
