The new Metrolink line to the Trafford Centre is a step closer after joint venture MPT removed a 14 metre long, 13.5 tonne footbridge at Crumpsall, making way for the new £350m Trafford Park line.

The line, which is currently under construction, will run from Crumpsall and become an interchange through the city centre and directly to the Trafford Centre, allowing tram passengers direct access to the shopping centre for the first time.

Video footage shows the bridge lifted out during the early hours of Sunday 14 January, using a 220-tonne crane.

The removal was part of the first phase of works at Crumpsall, which also includes the upgrade to the stairs on the Bury-bound platform,

the removal of the old lift shaft and disabled access ramp on the Manchester-bound platform and a new track-level crossing to improve accessibility. The first phase is due to be completed in March 2018, with a final phase of work, before the new Trafford Park line opens in 2020.

Coun Andrew Fender, chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “The removal of the bridge really provides an exciting visual demonstration of the progress being made in redeveloping the Crumpsall stop.”

Andy Smith, MPT Project Leader said: “Our team utilised their engineering and logistical expertise, working overnight to successfully remove the footbridge over Crumpsall Metrolink stop without disruption to customers. With the footbridge removed, the team is now able to move on to other works such as demolishing the passenger lift, OLE works and other platform modifications.”

Once complete passengers will also have access to more frequent service using the Crumpsall, Abraham Moss and Queens Road stops, with both Bury and Trafford Park line services running through them.
