VolkerRail Power Awarded Thackley Tunnel OLE Renewals Contract

Recent

VolkerRail Power has been awarded a new contract, by Network Rail Electrification & Plant, to replace all of the existing conductors within Thackley Tunnel (LNE) which is on the Airedale line from Leeds to Shipley then onto Bradford or Skipton.

The tunnel, which was electrified only 15 years ago, has been identified as an area requiring urgent attention on the network due to the aggressive conditions within the tunnel degrading the conductors at an accelerated rate significantly reducing the components in-service lifespan well below its design life expectancy. The project will see installation of new Return Conductors, Earth Wire, Contact Wire and a Catenary for Catenary replacement, all of which are designed to better withstand the harsh environment within the tunnel.

Tony Lyons, General Manager, VolkerRail Power added "This is the first contract to be awarded by Network Rail for this kind of work with our new High Output Wiring System and demonstrates our ability and flexibility as an innovative OLE construction solution provider".

The project is in its early programme stages with main construction planned for February 2010. Both Network Rail and VolkerRail Power project teams hope that it will provide an opportunity to use the innovative High Output Wiring System ("HOWS") to run the new wiring conductors, demonstrating the cost and time savings that can be made against using conventional wiring techniques.

With the contract secured VolkerRail Power will maintain the drive for operational excellence, delivering a safe, reliable, efficient, cost effective service and creating a solid foundation for further investment and future growth.
