VolkerRail was the winner of the first ever Railway Children’s Charity ‘Rail Rugby’ tournament. Held on Wednesday at The Rugby School, Warwickshire, the tournament was played on the world famous ground known as ‘The Close’ where the game of rugby was born.

12 teams took part in the six aside touch rugby tournament to help raise money for the Railway Children, an international children's charity who fight for vulnerable children living alone at risk and on the streets.

Split into two leagues, teams played against each other throughout the day. The top two teams from each league were put through to a knock out stage before the final match was held.

VolkerRail, who didn’t lose a match throughout the tournament, beat team Amey in the semi-finals and were triumphant in the final after beating the Staffordshire Alliance team.

Team captain Andrew Fawkes, VolkerRail project engineer, said: “It was a fantastic day and a great opportunity to play against some great teams and raise money for such a worthy cause. We performed very well as a team and it was great to see the VolkerRail spirit and character shine through in the semi-final and final game, when we had to overturn a half-time deficit in both games to win.”

Rob Capener, director of marketing and communications at The Railway Children charity, said: “The Rail Rugby tournament was a huge success and as a member of the Railway Children team I was privileged to take part in what was an exciting and hugely enjoyable day. Team spirits were high and it was fantastic to see so many of our rail industry supporters come together with a common goal, to have fun and raise funds for vulnerable street children. We would like to thank everyone that contributed to the success of the day, whether a competitor or volunteer and in particular to our tournament sponsors VolkerRail and Staffordshire Alliance”.
