Acton Diveunder and Yard Project

Acton

The Acton Diveunder and Yard Project is a major project within the surface works of the £16 billion Crossrail project, that connects Maidenhead and Berkshire to Essex, through Central London. In order to cope with the increased frequency of Crossrail services between Paddington and Maidenhead, Network Rail needed to upgrade part of the Great Western Mainline. This was broken into three schemes; with the Acton project forming part of the Crossrail West Inner Scheme.

VolkerRail delivered stages 3-17 of the Acton diveunder project and the Stockley mitigation works and in doing so, became the first infrastructure contractor to install and commission new track, overhead line and signalling power supplies on the Crossrail programme.

The project aim was to provide a grade separation that allowed freight services to leave Acton Yard onto the down relief of the Great Western Main Line without the need to cross passenger services on the up relief line on the level. Additionally, a route was required to be installed between Acton West and Acton Mainline station for freight trains to avoid the diveunder (and associated gradients) and to give access to Acton Yard.

Acting as principal contractor throughout, the team completed plain line track renewals works, installed new switch and crossings and associated switch operating mechanisms, modified the overhead line headspan systems and installed new portal systems on the main lines.

The team also improved access into Acton Yard by providing a new railway infrastructure to facilitate an increased turnout speed to minimise the relief lines occupancy. This included main line and yard remodelling, new plain line, switches and crossings and overhead line wiring and the removal of head-spans and associated civil engineering.  VolkerRail also undertook Acton Yard infrastructure improvements including a new fuel facility, yard lighting and drainage system.
