VolkerRail was approached by the construction arm of the Weardale Railway Company to design, install and test the electrical building services of their new steam depot at Wolsingham.
The project had some challenging requirements including being completed in eight weeks from order, along with the design.
The design was quickly produced which included the installation of a GRP sub-station, including civils to provide a brick built effect and a fire alarm system that would be sufficient to work in a steam depot.
All of the installation within the main shed was designed to withstand the corrosive environment of the steam locomotives, therefore all light fittings were installed as GRP and brackets, cable trays and ladder racks were made from stainless steel.
The works extended to the main depot yard where mast lighting was installed along with power supplies for the water tower and coaling plant.
A final activity was the installation of level crossing warning lights and flood lighting.
The works were handed over on time and within budget.
