Tamping works completed for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway transformation

Recent

VolkerRail’s Beaver tamper team has completed works at a new train carriage stable, located near Pickering station, in North Yorkshire.

The new carriage stable is in its final stages of completion, and the team completed works to tamp and align all of the point work.

Over two days, the team tamped and aligned four turnouts across the new stable which, due to its location, was not accessible by conventional tamping machines, and saw our Beaver tamper delivered to site by road.

Now the tamping is complete, it helps bring this project one step closer to completion, meaning this five-track, single-storey carriage stable, featuring a cantilevered roof, will be able accommodate up to 40 of the railway’s heritage carriages, and for the first time, enable servicing and cleaning tasks to be completed under cover.

Kevin Yeoman, operations manager (POM), VolkerRail said: “We have been involved with several of the NYMR’s Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey projects over the years, including the replacement of Bridge 27 using the Kirow 1200 crane, and we are pleased to continue supporting the NYMR, helping ensure that future generations can enjoy the largest heritage railway in the England.”

The £10 million Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey (YMJ) appeal is vital to sustaining the NYMR, so that future generations can enjoy the heritage railway, and is funded by the European Union, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the supporters of the NYMR.
