This is the largest investment programme in the tram system since it began running in 1994 and involves the replacement of 29km of the tram track over three networks.
Tram network owner South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and system operator Stagecoach Supertram are funding the project, with the majority of work being undertaken during the next four years at an estimated capital cost of £32million. VolkerRail completed the first stage of the project, between Spring Lane and Park Grange Croft, in 2013.
The work, which is essential to protect the city's tram network for the future, has been broken down into seven phases with the first four phases being completed by 2015.
The second stage works are set to commence on Friday 29th March in the Hillsborough/Malin Bridge area and will see VolkerRail replace worn out sections of tram track across the network over a four week period.
David Young, SYPTE Deputy Interim Director General, said: "The tram network is critical to daily life and the economy now and in the future in Sheffield. This work is essential to the future operation of the system and the benefits it brings to the region.
Ken Robinson, Director of Specialist Businesses at VolkerRail said: We are delighted that SYPTE has chosen us to continue with this important rail replacement programme. Although a challenging project, we are sector specialists in tram track replacement and have a robust plan in place to deliver the project in the most efficient way possible."
Once the replacement work is complete it is thought that the new rails, made from harder wearing steel, will have a life-expectancy of up to 30 years.
