VolkerRail’s Kirow crane receives high praise at Stockley

Recent

As the first company to introduce the Kirow rail mounted crane to the UK, our fleet of rail plant and maintainer operators, who are seen as some of the best in the country, recently received high praise from Carillion’s project team after successfully achieving a key milestone in Crossrail’s Stockley flyover project.

Utilising the Kirow KRC1200 UK rail mounted crane, the integrated Carillion and VolkerRail team installed 144 concrete pre-cast box beams, which form the base of the new up airport flyover; over the Great Western Main Line.

Due to the new flyovers location and its closeness to the surrounding urban area, orthodox access methods were difficult. VolkerRail’s Kirow KRC1200 UK Crane was chosen due to its lifting capacity, speed and flexibility in relation to the project requirements and timescales.

Working within tight time constraints, short midweek possessions and in close collaboration with Carillion, VolkerRail erected up to six 17m long, 32tonne beams at an elevation of 6m in a single possession.

John Byrne, Carillion’s possessions and operations manager commended VolkerRail on their part in a successful project: “VolkerRail has helped us to deliver an extremely difficult part of this build. The team are tremendous to work with and had an outstanding attitude and drive. Thank you and well done.”

Carillion also utilised VolkerRail’s Kirow 810 to install the flyovers’ 45m2 pre-constructed concrete base, during the 2015 Easter weekend possession.

VolkerRail’s operations manager Karl Hillsdon said: “This project provided a great opportunity to showcase the lifting capabilities of our Kirow cranes, which helped deliver a very complex project.”
