Staff at VolkerRail have raised over £750 after taking part in Doncaster’s annual Dragon Boat Race Challenge, held at the Lakeside on Saturday 11th July 2015.

Now in its sixth year and a regular feature on Doncaster’s tourism calendar the event pits teams against each other in a 30 foot dragon boat over a 200m course, all in aid of a worthy cause. This year’s event was in aid of Doncaster’s Aurora Centre, a local charity that provides complementary therapy treatments to people in Doncaster and Bassetlaw who have been diagnosed with cancer.

This was the first year VolkerRail took part in the event and although a nervy start, the ‘Volker Vikings’ were strong contenders finishing second in their first two heats and ending the day with an easy win in their last; ensuring they finished in the top 10.

Team captain Tina Cator, corporate communications executive, said: It was a brilliant day and a very entertaining and challenging event that takes part in Doncaster. I’d like to thank all our, colleagues’ family and friends for their support, as so many came although to cheer us on. Although we didn’t make it to the final we still did incredibly well for our first time and we will definitely make a return to the competition next year.”

Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today.
