Merseyrail Power Supply Upgrade

Merseyside

VolkerRail is upgrading the existing power supply along Merseyrail’s 75km route.

This enhancement is in readiness for Merseyrail’s new state-of-the-art trains , which are replacing their current fleet, that has been running since the late 1970s.

The new electric and environmentally friendly trains, which have been designed specifically for the Merseyrail network, will be modern, safe, fast and comfortable, carrying more people, more quickly.

To make sure there is sufficient power supply to run the new trains, VolkerRail is undertaking extensive power supply upgrade work on a number of sub-stations and DC traction equipment along the networks Northern and Wirral Line. This includes:

  • Replacing the high voltage switchgear
  • Building three new substations
  • Upgrading nine substations
  • Signalling modifications

Merseyrail

The Merseyrail network is a self-contained network that operates over 600 regular services per day, every 15 minutes, to 68 stations throughout the Liverpool City Region, including four underground stations in the city centre that receive services every few minutes.

The work is expected to be completed by October 2021.
