Each year, the ICE North West Awards showcase the collective and individual achievements of civil engineers, seeking out excellence in civil engineering practice across the region, and celebrating recently completed projects, diversity best practice and outstanding individual contribution within the engineering profession.

The new 5.5km Trafford Park Line was awarded the Large Project of the Year Award following an impressive delivery date - seven months ahead of schedule - despite the challenges of construction within an urban environment - and made extensive use of BIM for stakeholder collaboration.

For over a decade, MPT has been expanding the Metrolink system to become the UK’s largest tram network, running to over 100km and 99 stops. The new Trafford Park Line, which officially opened in March 2020, offers sustainable transport links to some of Greater Manchester’s busiest visitor destinations, running through Trafford Park, Europe’s largest trading estate and home to more than 1,400 businesses, employing over 33,000 people.

Emma Antrobus, director - ICE North West, said: “The judging panel was in no doubt that Manchester Metrolink’s Trafford Park Line is an impressive scheme, delivering outstanding benefits for people and the wider economy. It is an asset to be proud of and a very worthy ICE North West winner.”

Ged Geraghty, MPT project manager, said: “The response received following the construction of the Trafford Park Line has been extraordinary, and we are proud to have received further industry recognition for our achievements.

“This award is further testament to the hard work achieved by the joint venture teams and our supply chain partners.”
