Early careers

Whichever route you join us by, you will be offered ongoing opportunities to develop professionally and personally throughout your career, with full support at every stage. You will gain valuable on site experience and work closely with a site mentor and or apprentice officer, who will provide immediate feedback, advice and guidance on training and any construction related issues.

Apprenticeship scheme

With many of our railway professionals starting their careers from an apprenticeship, we understand the value of investing in our future workforce and run a number of apprentice schemes across the business.

As well as working on some of the country’s biggest railway projects, our apprentices work alongside experienced staff to gain construction specific skills as well as receiving training towards a nationally recognised qualification; through a formal college programme; with classroom-based learning.

Apprenticeships are a central part of our operational business and we continue to develop relationships with local colleges and training providers, to establish a strong foundation for our apprenticeship framework. Our apprenticeships take between two and three years to complete, depending on the level, skill and sector you wish to work in and are tailored to suit the needs of the individual.

Graduate programmes

We offer graduate opportunities to individuals with enthusiasm, initiative and ambition; to become part of our team, building relationships and contributing to a highly successful and profitable business

Our graduate programmes are a one to three-year experience, developing skills to make future leaders within the business. We recruit graduates on their potential and give them the opportunity to develop in their role, within a structured framework programme.

Work placements and experience

VolkerRail provides placements and work experience, for residents who live locally to our sites and offices, ranging from administrative positions to on-site roles.

Our placement programme provides students with the opportunity to build on their technical knowledge within a site environment. Throughout the placement, we ensure students receive regular feedback and, depending on outcome, offer students the opportunity to join us; once they have completed their studies.
