On 18 April, representatives from Railway Children visited VolkerRail’s head office in Doncaster, to raise awareness of the work the charity undertakes, and to show their appreciation towards everyone who has helped support the charity since 2011.

Railway Children is an international charity, working to reach vulnerable children who have no-one else to care for and protect them. This includes the 10,000 young people British Transport Police find in danger on the UK’s rail network every year.

In attendance was Katie Mason, the charity’s event manager, and project workers, Catherine Griffiths and Laura Broadbent, who represent the charity across Yorkshire and the Humber.

As part of the visit, VolkerRail held a dress down day and a charity bake sale, with some amazing cakes and pastries made and donated by employees from across the business, which raised £854.57.

Railway Children also hosted a talk, discussing the work the charity does to support vulnerable young children in the UK, India, and Africa, along with the upcoming events employees can take part in.

Commenting, VolkerRail’s finance director, Andrew Wilkins, said: “VolkerRail has a long-standing relationship with Railway Children, and we regularly support the charity, as it is hugely important that we shine a light on the problems and difficulties children face when running away from home.

“Since 2011, VolkerRail and its employees have raised over £150,000 for Railway Children, and with events like today, we hope to see this continue for years to come.”

Katie Mason also commented: “Thank you so much for raising so much money and for making us feel so welcome. It was lovely to be part of your fundraising day - especially as cake was involved - and to have the opportunity to talk about the children your business is helping, and for all you do.”
