Organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers and New Civil Engineer, the BCI Awards recognise and reward excellence in project delivery, and projects delivering positive outcomes for society.

VolkerRail is a finalist in three categories. The VolkerRailStory joint venture, currently undertaking the Hope Valley Railway Upgrade Project, is shortlisted for Community Impact Initiative of the Year and Place Making Initiative of the Year, and VolkerRail’s mental health initiative - Building Relationships on Site (BROS) is shortlisted for Health, Safety & Wellbeing Initiative of the Year.

The VolkerRailStory joint venture has committed to reducing its environmental impact and improving the lives and prospects of the communities that live close to the project area, and over the last two years, has delivered over 2,000 volunteering hours and created over £36m in social value.

BROS is an innovative mental health initiative, developed for site-based operatives, by site-based operatives, to help reduce the stigma of mental health conversations and teach operatives how to recognise and act to a colleagues change in behaviours.

Commenting, Stuart Webster-Spriggs, VolkerRail’s HSEQS director, said: “We are immensely proud to be named as a BCI Award finalist, and for our teams to be recognised for the work they undertake to continually improve the health of our employees, as well as the commitments made to help improve the communities in which we work.

“I thank everyone for their continued efforts, and wish all the finalists good luck.”

Alongside VolkerRail, sister company VolkerFitzpatrick is a finalist in the Environmental Project of the Year and Transport Project of the Year categories, for the A31 Ringwood Bridge Replacement and Widening Scheme.
