East West Rail Phase 2 named as National Transport Awards finalists

The East West Rail Phase 2 project has been named as a finalist in the 2025 National Transport Awards.

The project is shortlisted for the Design, Engineering & Construction Project of the Year Award, aimed to recognise remarkable achievements in scale, design, and technical innovation, as to, demonstrable improvements to the network, either locally, regionally or nationally.

The East West Rail project is a major railway programme aimed to deliver much needed transport connections for communities, businesses, academic centres and jobs between Oxford and Cambridge. 

Phase 2 of the project, to connect Oxford with Milton Keynes and Bedford, was delivered by the East West Rail Alliance, comprised of Network Rail, AtkinsRéalis, Laing O'Rourke and VolkerRail. Work included rebuilding Bletchley flyover and installing 66 kilometres of new track to connect Oxford with Bletchley for first time in 50 years.

Mark James, alliance director, said: “We are honoured to be shortlisted in the National Transport Awards. The Alliance has delivered exceptional results to ensure the project was completed ahead of time, under budget, and with a 10% biodiversity net gain.”

The National Transport Awards highlights the unwavering commitment, expertise, and innovation of those working tirelessly to improve our transport networks across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. 

The awards will take place on Wednesday 17 September, in London.
