VolkerRail has successfully delivered major signalling upgrades at Edge Hill during the Early May Bank Holiday, as part of ongoing investment to improve reliability and performance on the West Coast Main Line.
During a staged 54‑hour possession, VolkerRail renewed four signals, installed a new gantry, a new dropper and a straight post, and safely recovered redundant signalling infrastructure.
The work required detailed planning and close coordination across multiple teams to ensure it was completed safely and efficiently within the possession.
The upgrades mean ageing signalling infrastructure at Edge Hill has now been replaced with new, modern equipment, supporting more reliable journeys for both passenger and freight services in the long term.
Ashley Redmond, VolkerRail’s programme manager, said: “These commissioning activities do not simply happen, they are the result of the hard work, dedication, and professionalism demonstrated by everyone involved. The achievements delivered are a direct reflection of that collective effort, and mark our third successful delivery of the year to date.
“We are particularly pleased with the collaborative approach shown alongside our client Network Rail and our design and build partners, InoRail and ReadyPower, which has been instrumental in achieving a successful outcome.”
Network Rail has thanked passengers for their patience during the temporary closure, noting that while there is never an ideal time to carry out major rail works, the improvements completed over the Bank Holiday will contribute to long‑term benefits across the network.
