Support for Rail Safety Week

To help promote the importance of safety in and around the railway, VolkerRail are taking part in Rail Safety Week.

Since Monday 26 September and until Sunday 2 October, VolkerRail’s senior management team (SMT) are visiting worksites, depots and site offices, across the UK, to talk to staff about safety.

As part of the visits, VolkerRail’s SMT are also highlighting the importance of hazard reporting and will be rewarding the best worksites, depots, site offices and individuals engaged and making a difference.

Alan Tarrant, founder of Rail Safety Week attended a site visit in Doncaster. Commenting on the experience Alan said: “It was great to get out on site to see first-hand what VolkerRail are trying to achieve with its workforce.

“One simple, but very effective ideathey do is to ask staff to take just 15 minutes prior to starting their shift, to check around their work area and ensure there are no hazards or dangers.  VolkerRail stress that they should not accept sub-standard working conditions thus empowering staff to make the changes needed.  This was very refreshing to see.”

VolkerRail’s HSQE director, Stuart Webster-Spriggs, said: “Providing a safe, responsible, efficient and healthy work environment to the benefit of all employees, sub-contractors and other stakeholders is key to our success. With over 500 major injuries occurring in the industry each year, we have to ensure safety is at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Events like this allow us to drive home its importance.”
