VolkerRail completes major Supertram track renewals ahead of schedule

Throughout August, VolkerRail has been undertaking major improvement works to restore the ‘Delta Junction’ - a length of track near Park Square roundabout, which all routes pass through. 

VolkerRail has been working with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) since 2010 to extend the lifespan of the network, improve comfort and reduce noise in areas where tracks are currently worn.

Since 8 August, VolkerRail has replaced the equivalent of 9 point ends (3 double junctions to form a delta) and 80m of plain line, along with installing and upgrading points, signalling equipment, and pedestrian crossings to improve long-term reliability.

Jamie Kelly, VolkerRail, programme project manager, said: “"We're delighted to hand this project back to our client SYMCA a week ahead of schedule. The commitment shown by the teams on this challenging project during a summer heatwave has been impressive.

“All disciplines involved delivered an incredibly complex layout on the busiest part of the network."

Melanie Corcoran, executive director of transport at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, said: "Our multi-million-pound investment is creating a more reliable network for all of us who depend on Supertram every day. The investment is essential if we're going to build a tram network that is fit for the future and will serve us well in the next 30 years.”

Supertram is at the heart of the South Yorkshire People's Network. The work undertaken throughout August will help strengthen this public transport system, making it more reliable, better connected and easier for people to access work, education and opportunities.
