VolkerRail has successfully delivered a significant milestone in the Radlett Rail Freight Interchange project, completing major works to install the first set of switches and crossings (S&C) on the Midland Main Line.

Delivered between 8 and 10 May in collaboration with VolkerFitzpatrick, the works mark the first S&C unit being installed into the live main line - a critical step in connecting the new rail freight facility to the national network.

The weekend programme saw intensive activity across the site, including cutting into the main lines, installing S&C, welding, stressing, tamping and overhead line equipment (OLE) works.

Nine track panels were removed using VolkerRail’s Kirow crane, with the heaviest panel weighing 22 tonnes. Installation of the new track panels followed, working south to north. The programme continued with top stone installation followed by tamping works to complete the track alignmen

This phase represents the culmination of extensive preparatory and enabling works carried out over the past two years, including formation renewals, bridge works and the construction of a new chord line linking the Midland Main Line with the freight depot.

Jon Cunningham, senior project manager – track, for VolkerRail, said: “VolkerRail has successfully completed the first of two disruptive possessions as part of the final phase of the Radlett Strategic Rail Freight Interchange. This milestone represents a coordinated, multidisciplinary effort by VolkerRail Specialist Businesses, delivering p-way,  OLE, and piling works on the St Pancras to Chesterfield Main Line.

Working on behalf of principal contractor VolkerFitzpatrick, VolkerRail Specialist Businesses undertook the installation, welding, and stressing of a Network Rail NR60 MKII E switch turnout. In parallel, the OLE team installed three span wires in close proximity to the renewal site, ensuring seamless integration with the track works and other project key disciplines

Once complete, the new junction will provide a vital connection into the Radlett Rail Freight Interchange, supporting the movement of goods by rail and helping to reduce road freight.
