VolkerRail holds community day to rejuvenate a local school garden
The garden at St Mary and St Andrew Catholic School in Barton, near Preston got a spring make over recently thanks to VolkerRail and their project partners.
After meeting with school representatives and discussing ways to help, CPET a team consisting of staff from VolkerRail, Network Rail, ABC Electrification and Amey, provided all the labour and material needed to complete the work. During a community day on 2 March, volunteers removed an old pond, which was near to the school and becoming increasingly unsafe for the children and rejuvenated and raised the existing vegetable plots, as well as planting new flower beds.
Michael Hardie, project manager for VolkerRail said: “Helping local schools gives you a great sense of achievement. My team and I are immensely proud of what we have accomplished. We have already agreed to return and lay new turf and other coverings around the vegetable bed and will continue to build on this relationship.”
Anya Cross, headmistress at St Mary and St Andrew Catholic School said: “I was delighted when we were first approached by VolkerRail. Being the head of a Catholic School I thought my prayers were being answered and throughout the whole experience everyone has been fantastic.”
“The beds have been raised to a much better child friendly height and the children are already planning what they want to plant. We are also delighted that the pond area has been made safe, allowing us to move on in the next stage of our outdoor development.”
CPET, is currently working on a number of significant projects in the Barton area, including a signalling power supply renewals project between Warrington and Burton and Holme. The community day was organised by VolkerRail to help CPET engage with the local community and undertake projects that offered the area real benefit.
