VolkerWessels UK opens its doors to local schools and communities
As part of Open Doors 2021, VolkerWessels UK is opening its doors to schools and communities to visit its construction sites across the country, between 4 – 9 October.
Open Doors is an annual event delivered by Build UK, in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), that provides local communities and the next generation with a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the wide variety of career opportunities available within the industry.
VolkerWessels UK delivers solutions across the civil engineering and construction sectors, and operates through five separate business units, all of which are opening their doors for the event.
VolkerRail will open:
Scunthorpe Plant depot: VolkerRail provides and operates a broad spectrum of specialist plant and services and the plant depot in Scunthorpe supports the unique installation, maintenance and operational requirements of the UK rail industry.
VolkerFitzpatrick will open the following sites:
Brent Cross West Station: a new rail station, on the Midland Main Line and Thameslink routes being constructed for Barnet Council, as part of its Brent Cross Cricklewood Regeneration programme.
Gosforth Depot: this depot is being constructed for Stadler to accommodate the new state-of-the-art trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro, set to enter passenger service from 2023.
SEGRO Park Tottenham: the construction of eight industrial warehouse units, covering a total footprint of 190,000ft². Each unit will feature a mezzanine floor level, office space, breakout areas and amenities.
VolkerStevin will open the following sites:
Kendal flood risk management scheme: VBA, a joint venture between VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and SNC-Lavalin's Atkins business, is delivering a Flood Risk Management Scheme on behalf of the Environment Agency, to better protect homes and businesses from flooding.
The Southsea Coastal Scheme: this scheme is being delivered as a joint venture by VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster (VSBW). The scheme will stretch for 4.5km and will help to reduce the risk of flooding to more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses.
VolkerHighways will open:
West Berkshire Council Highway Management and Maintenance contract: VolkerHighways has been working with West Berkshire Council since 2016 and is currently delivering its Highway Management and Maintenance contract, with works currently involving a road widening improvement scheme along the A339.
Medway highways infrastructure contract: VolkerHighways has worked with Medway Council since 2007 and is delivering its current highways infrastructure contract. The works include planned and responsive maintenance, including carriageway and footway resurfacing, winter maintenance, drainage cleansing and road markings.
VolkerLaser will open the following:
Tamar Bridge: originally constructed in 1959, the Tamar Bridge is a 335m long suspension bridge, spanning the river Tamar between Saltash, Cornwall, and Plymouth, Devon. VolkerLaser is undertaking works including resurfacing, deck preparation, waterproofing, expansion joint refurbishment, and weld repairs.
