Continued support to Bluebell Wood

VolkerRail has donated £10,823 to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, continuing its long-term support driven by the Close Call safety reporting scheme.

Bluebell Wood supports babies, children, and young people with life-limiting conditions, offering overnight care, music therapy, counselling, sibling support groups, home visits and more.

The Close Call scheme encourages employees to report potential safety concerns, allowing the business to act before an accident or incident occurs.

For over a decade, parent company VolkerWessels UK has pledged to donate a set amount for every close call raised. Each year, 50% of the total raised across VolkerWessels UK is donated to a chosen charity, with the remaining 50% distributed among its business units in proportion to the number of close calls reported. VolkerRail also contributes an extra donation for every close call that is fully closed out.

VolkerRail has supported Bluebell Wood through its Close Call scheme since 2007, donating more than £120,000 to the charity.

It costs Bluebell Wood around £6.7m a year to support families across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire, and parts of North Lincolnshire. Only 16% of this comes from statutory funding, with the remainder raised through fundraising activity.

This year’s cheque includes £6,146 from VolkerRail and £4,677 from VolkerWessels UK.

Stuart Webster-Spriggs, VolkerRail HSQES director, said: “‘We are proud to continue our long-standing support for Bluebell Wood, allowing the charity to provide extraordinary care to so many children and their families, who benefit from their compassion and support.”

Anna Kirk, Bluebell Wood’s fundraising development manager, said: “The incredible support we continue to receive from VolkerRail and VolkerWessels UK helps local families who need our care the most, and it genuinely makes a profound difference. Their commitment over many years has had a lasting impact on the children and families who rely on us, and we are extremely grateful for such a dedicated partnership.

“This longstanding support means we can continue providing the specialist care babies, children, young people and their families need from Bluebell Wood – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – whenever they need us.”
