VolkerRail awarded new contract for track renewals on London Trams network

Recent

VolkerRail has been awarded a new Embedded Framework contract, by Transport for London (TfL), to undertake track renewals on London Trams.

Croydon Tram 2021

Opened in 2000, London Trams is a 28km, 39 tram stop network, serving Croydon and the surrounding areas in south London, providing environmentally friendly, modern, public transport to passengers.

This new contract is the third framework awarded to VolkerRail since 2012, each providing track renewal services over the embedded track network, to remove and replace worn out sections of track assets.

Over the last decade, VolkerRail has replaced more than 6,000m of track, across 32 areas of the network, including Reeves Corner, Addiscombe Road, Tamworth Road, Morden Road, George Street and Gravel Hill.

This new, three year contract - extendable by up to five years - will see VolkerRail design and upgrade embedded, switches and crossings, and plain line track along key sections of the network.

The work being undertaken forms part of London Trams wider 15 year ‘Trams 2030’ plan, to accommodate growing demand, improve reliability and support the regeneration of Croydon town centre.

Ruchi Patel, project manager for TfL, said: “The award of this new contract to VolkerRail, to maintain the London Trams network, helps ensure TfL can continue to offer customers the safest and most reliable service possible.”

Sam Allen, general manager for VolkerRail’s metro and rail projects division, said: “VolkerRail has extensive experience in building and maintaining light rail networks, and we are delighted to continue our work, alongside TfL, to help maintain London’s Trams network.”
