Major track renewals completed on London Trams network
VolkerRail has completed a major programme of track renewals on London Trams network, renewing over 750 metres of embedded track through the central Croydon tram loop.
During a month-long blockade throughout August, VolkerRail worked on behalf of Transport for London (TfL), to deliver extensive renewals across Wellesley Road and Tamworth Road, replacing life expired infrastructure.
The project formed part of TfL's ongoing investment in the London Trams network and included the renewal of embedded track, rail replacement, welding, bonding, signalling and concrete works, alongside reinstatement activities including block paving, white lining and surfacing works.
To enable engineers to safely deliver the complex programme of renewals, a temporary closure was in place on the town centre loop between Reeves Corner and East Croydon. Close collaboration between VolkerRail, TfL, designers and supply chain partners also enabled the team to adapt to existing highway conditions and maintain progress throughout the blockade.
As part of the renewals work, VolkerRail introduced an innovative rail encapsulation system which was trialled on the scheme to reduce manual handling during installation and help improve efficiency during delivery. This is the second innovation delivered by VolkerRail whilst undertaking track maintenance across the network. The first was in February, where VolkerRail partnered with Sika to trial its Icosit® KC 350/45 polymer rail grout, to support improved efficiency during construction and long‑term performance of the asset.
Now complete, the renewed infrastructure will help improve ride quality, reduce noise levels and support a more reliable tram service for passengers travelling through Croydon town centre.
