Meet Logan Dunn
Logan is a great example of how an apprenticeship is a good way to start your career. Finding he no longer enjoyed the classroom environment, Logan decided to look into apprenticeships so he could learn on the job.
He joined VolkerRail in 2019 as an electrical apprentice, working in our Power division. In 2022, Logan passed his Level 3 Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship. This is a four-year apprenticeship, but through hard work and continued commitment, Logan completed his studies a year early.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
Before I joined VolkerRail I was at college, but I didn’t feel like this was the right environment for me anymore, as I wanted more than just classroom-based learning. When I turned 17, I joined VolkerRail, and it was the best thing I ever did.
What made you choose VolkerRail?
VolkerRail was recommended to me by friends and family, and after hearing such positive things about the business, there was an easy decision to apply. I’ve never looked back. I’m very glad I decided to take on the apprenticeship, as VolkerRail is a brilliant place to work, and I have a great deal of support from my line manager and colleagues.
How did your apprenticeship help you?
It gave me a great deal of newfound confidence, both on the job and personally. I now feel confident that I’m able to carry out my duties with the reassurance that I have my qualification. When I completed my course, I was over the moon; it was the best feeling I had ever experienced.
It has also allowed me to pursue further study, as I have recently been able to start my HNC in electrical and electronic engineering.
Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?
Definitely. An apprenticeship is the best way to learn new skills and a trade, whilst gaining real-life work experience.
